Schmeeckle Reserve
Schmeeckle Reserve is a 280-acre conservancy area on the campus of UW-Stevens Point set aside to protect natural communities of central Wisconsin, serve as an outdoor classroom for learning, and provide outdoor recreation opportunities. The Friends of Schmeeckle Reserve organization was created to support and enhance this campus natural area.
Schmeeckle is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Explore 5 miles of trails and boardwalks, a 24-acre lake, a visitor center, and a diversity of habitats that support numerous wildlife species. Schmeeckle is also the trailhead and headquarters of the Green Circle Trail, a 27-mile hiking and biking trail that loops around Stevens Point.
The Schmeeckle Reserve Visitor Center, open year round, is a gateway for exploring the Reserve and Green Circle. Staff are available to answer questions and provide information. Browse unique nature gifts at the gift shop, watch wildlife at the bird viewing windows, and explore hands-on exhibits. The Green Circle Trailhead, located adjacent to the visitor center, features year-round restrooms, a beautiful picnic shelter, a water bottle filling station, and a bicycle repair station.
