Friends volunteers at a Candlelight Hike Festival

Volunteer

Volunteering at Schmeeckle is the perfect way to give back to the nature reserve that you enjoy. There are many volunteer opportunities available to share your unique experiences, skills, and time.

Volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, families, and groups. View the list below to see various opportunities. Contact us to to learn more!

Trail crew

A weekly volunteer trail crew cuts, hauls, and chips wood to keep Schmeeckle’s trails safe and beautiful. The crew also constructs benches, tables, boardwalks, and other trail structures.

Habitat restoration

Restoration volunteers help remove invasive plants like buckthorn and Phragmites, and plant native vegetation in their place.

Native gardening

Garden volunteers help to plant and maintain beautiful native gardens around the visitor center area for the enjoyment of all.

Litter pickup

While most visitors are respectful, litter often blows in along roads and businesses. Volunteers help to keep the trails and habitats of Schmeeckle clean and natural.

Wildlife/bird research

Volunteers help maintain and monitor feeders and bird houses, and assist with other wildlife research projects.

Education/programming

Our education volunteers help to lead nature programs and hikes, teach outdoor skills, and work with school and youth groups.

Community events

Event volunteers help to plan, organize, and run community events and programs sponsored by the Friends, like the popular Candlelight Hike Festivals, volunteer days, and workshop series.

Committee help

Committees help set direction for Friends initiatives. Join committees such as Advancement (fundraising/membership), Finance (budgeting), Lands, Trails, and Facilities (development projects/land acquisition), and Community Outreach (programs/marketing).
