Throughout the last month, Schmeeckle’s resident large carnivore has been quite active on the Friends of Schmeeckle Trail Cams. Though roadrunners are not found anywhere near Wisconsin, the Wiley Coyote is quite common throughout the state, including the Stevens Point Area.
Coyotes are about the size of a medium-sized dog. Adults usually weigh between 30 to 50 pounds. Coyotes have long, thin legs, a tapered muzzle, and rather large, pointed ears. They also have a bushy, black-tipped drooping tail. Coyotes range in color from a dull yellow to gray. They are quite adaptable in terms of habitats: being equally at home in cities, woodlands, deserts, and anything in between. They also have a varied diet, feeding on rodents, insects, reptiles, berries, corn, birds, rabbits, and sometimes deer. When walking in Schmeeckle, keep your eyes peeled for this interesting and adaptable canine!
