Candlelight Hike Magic? Its People

by Barbara Dixson

The spring Candlelight Hike fell on a chilly, rainy day that cleared up just in time for 2,000 people to enjoy the trails, program, education stations, and snacks.  Our amazing Melissa Ruether centered the purposeful chaos of the event; the Schmeeckle student staff were on hand in force for set-up and anything needed; and fabulous volunteers turned up early and stayed late.  The sense of community that connected all of us who worked to make this event happen gave it a lovely aura of festivity, playfulness, and affection.  And that bit of magic wafted out among those who walked the trails and ate the popcorn.

Pictured above: Gary Speckmann worked four days in a row preparing for the Candlelight Hike, and came with Kathleen Speckmann on Friday to be trail greeters, while Dezmond Revord was a roving assistant.
