Glimpses of Summer’s End

Photos by Steve Faber, identifications by Griffin Bray, text by Barbara Dixson

Once again, Steve Faber’s camera has caught images of the Reserve that invite us into the moment. Early September, summer fading away, beauty remaining.

Lovely early autumn light through the trees beside Lake Joanis

Griffin told me this: The flower is a yellow flag iris, an invasive species in Wisconsin. We are trying to control them down by the lake and sprayed them this year, but it will likely be a few years before we get rid of them. It’s a shame since they are so pretty…

Also from Griffin: The hawk is probably an immature Cooper’s hawk. They’re starting migration, so there should be lots of hawks coming through soon – watch the birdfeeders!
