Performance? Video? Signage? Practicum Students do all of the above!

by Barbara Dixson

Stevens Point residents remember the character programs at the fall and spring Candlelight Hikes from way back: the only lighting was powered by an extension cord from the visitor center and the students who were playing frogs or snakes or hawks would bellow their lines at top voice.  This year, on the stage of our lovely Pankowski Friends Amphitheater, with full theatrical lighting and amplification, the four students currently enrolled in practicum (the capstone experience for the interpretation part of the Environmental Education and Interpretation program) roped two friends into taking key roles, and the six of them performed “Totally Terrific Turtles” to enthusiastic audiences.

Chris McCart, who teaches this class with support from graduate student Griffin Bray, Schmeeckle Director Jim Buchholz, and Schmeeckle Outreach Coordinator Melissa Ruether, seems determined to give these young professionals experience in the full range of ways they will communicate with the public in the years ahead.  Their individually presented public programs, on some aspect of nature or culture in the Reserve, are popular with people of all ages.  If you go on the Schmeeckle YouTube or Facebook channels, you have likely seen the nature notes videos they’ve created.

And, beginning last semester, the practicum students have created signs which are posted around the Trail of Reflections.  By mid-December, you’ll be able to read about several of the restoration projects accomplished or underway in Schmeeckle. Each sign will also pose a question.  Those interested can pick up a “passport” at the visitor center, respond to the posted questions, and return to the visitor center for their prize at the end.

Thus these young naturalists and educators invite all the rest of us into their sheer delight in the outdoors.
